Progressive Western Mass Company is looking for high-energy multi-faceted individual to work in our multi plant manufacturing facilities.  The ideal candidate must possess a 1st or 2nd Class Fireman’s License to support/back up the Lead Engineer in the operation and maintenance of Hi Pressure Boilers supplying heat and power to the production facility. The ideal candidate must also have a working knowledge of plumbing and pipefitting with the ability for maintenance and trouble shooting in a production and boiler room setting.  General maintenance experience in a manufacturing setting is a plus.  The candidate must have the ability to work scheduled and rotating hours, with good organization skills and the ability to prioritize assigned duties.

Utility Operator

Operate, maintain, and repair the campus steam, condensate, potable water and sewer distribution systems, backflow prevention testing and cross connection surveyor.

Minimum Qualifications: Ability to detect and locate causes of failures and breakdown of equipment and sufficient knowledge to isolate failed systems. Ability to install, maintain and repair steam, water, sewer and storm drain distribution piping systems and related equipment. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of underground steam, potable water, effluent water and sewer distribution systems such as steam piping and the related expansion properties of steam pipes, insulation systems, and valving. Ability to work from drawings and diagrams and from oral and written instructions. Previous experience working with underground steam distribution systems. Ability to climb, work in underground tunnels and vaults, work in confined spaces along with heavy lifting and other strenuous activities. Must be willing to work with outside contractors under varying weather conditions.

Licenses Required: Possession of a Grade 2-I full active or higher Certificate of Competency issued by the Massachusetts Board of Certifications of Operators of Wastewater Treatment Facilities pursuant to the Code of Massachusetts Regulations 257 CMR 2.00. Valid Massachusetts class D driver’s license also required.

Job Responsibilities:
Plan and perform a variety of duties to maintain powerhouse equipment to provide services to process operation throughout facility. Practice and comply with environmental, health and safety directions and procedures. Maintain, troubleshoot, modify, repair and inspect a variety of boilers and associated equipment both on and off site. Operate and adjust equipment to provide maximum efficiency. Take water samples on boilers and tower water systems, analyze results and take corrective action. Requires the ability to changeover boilers using alternate fuels, oils or gas.

Plan and perform various duties such as operate, troubleshoot, modify, and repair, preventive maintenance and maintain powerhouse equipment to supply compressed air, cold/chilled water, steam, power and to provide services for various other process operations. Exercise judgment and care in varying operating conditions to compensate for fluctuating load and to maintain maximum boiler efficiency and in altering operational methods in emergencies to avoid interruption of services. Follow all standard or recognized procedures.

Position Requires:
Well-rounded knowledge in the operation, maintenance and service of various heating and cooling systems, air equipment, and their associated controls and components.
Familiarity with overhaul and repair techniques of mechanical equipment.
Working from complex blueprints, drawings, service manuals, charts, graphs and other written and verbal instructions.
Valid license for motor vehicle and power industrial trucks. Certification in lock-out tag-out, confined space, respirators and hazardous material familiarization.
Preferred candidate will have well-rounded knowledge in computer operations and programs, such as Carrier Comfort Network (CCN) and Automatically Programmed tools (APT)

Qualified candidate must have a valid Power House license.

Equivalent to 3-6 years trades training in power plant operations and maintenance.

Position requires employee to work on a rotating shift schedule.

Shift Supervisor

Covanta Pittsfield, LLC is a 240 ton per day Energy from Waste facility, located in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

The facility consists of [3] Enercon 80 TPD combustors, with two Bigelow waste heat boilers generating approximately 65K/hr. steam. The steam is generated at 250psi at 550 degrees F and is delivered to Crane and Company; the remainder is used for in house electrical generation. 

Description:

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Pittsfield EfW facility. This includes but is not limited to, supervising a shift of three operations personnel, maintaining all required paperwork and monitoring plant auxiliaries. Operate facility within regulatory permit limits. Generate work orders on an as needed basis. Operate facility to achieve budgetary throughput. This position reports directly to the Chief Engineer.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent. A Massachusetts Third Class Engineer’s license. Required to obtain an ASME QRO certification within a reasonable timeframe from date of hire.  

A minimum of 3-5 years of supervisory experience in a heavy industrial setting.

Additional background/skills in a maintenance or technical discipline are a plus.

Responsibilities include the safe and efficient operation of two (2) steam boilers and related auxiliaries.  Duties include water chemistry, equipment monitoring and maintenance. 

 

The successful candidate must have a Massachusetts Second Class engineer's license. The employee must have the ability to perform the essential functions of the position and a satisfactory work record. 

 

This is a seasonal job, starting in November and ending in April. You will be working with two (2) other firemen running the boiler house seven (7) days per week twenty-four (24) hours per day.

 

H ours: Eight (8) hour shifts, with week-end 12 hours shifts allowing for periodic days off.

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

This position is primarily responsible for performing diversified manual and mechanical duties to operate a high pressure steam boiler system (dual fuel).

Duties include:  operation and maintenance of steam boilers; water treatment and back pressure steam turbine.  Perform routine maintenance and repairs to the systems.  Maintain work area in a clear orderly condition.  Follow all established safety rules. 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MA Third Class Steam Engineer License required.  

  • 3+ years experience.

  • Candidate must be willing to work 12 hour rotating shifts (including weekends and holidays).

  • Strong verbal communication skills required.

  • Excellent time and attendance.

  • Be able to work independently.

  • Physical ability to work around machinery, climbing steps and lifting is necessary

 

Position report to the Chief Stationary Engineer
